One of the largest retailers of school uniforms and value-for-money family clothing in the UK was feeling the consequences of its own success.
The retailer’s website dealt with large customer volumes, but experienced occasional challenging peaks. These were usually at predictable times – seasonal holidays and the run-up to the start of a new school year – but were occasionally unpredictable. For example, celebrities sometimes wear the brand’s clothing on daytime TV or in newspaper coverage, resulting in a sudden rush for the exact items worn.
The website’s infrastructure was hosted in an on-premises data centre, was expensive to run, and inflexible when planning for scaling demands. Changes to the infrastructure required a nine-month lead time, which made planning for and responding to spikes in demand challenging.
The retailer therefore embarked on a migration to cloud-based infrastructure supported by a programme of best-practices training for technical staff. The migration had to be completed without service interruption, especially during the busiest times of the year.
On the recommendation of Infinity Works, the retailer selected AWS as the cloud platform.
